State Closes Juvenile Jail

By KRWG News

Silver City – The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department has shut down Grant County's juvenile jail while it investigates how it treated a minor.

The state agency's spokeswoman, Romaine Serna, says she can't discuss the incident and did not know how long the investigation would take.

Grant County Detention Center administrator Jim Moffett says Friday's suspension came over a Jan. 10 incident involving detention center officers and a minor.

He declined to discuss whether an internal investigation resulted in any disciplinary action.

Serna says the state agency will make recommendations to the jail and could fine it or take other sanctions.

She says the jail's reopening would depend on the county's reaction to the investigation.

Juveniles taken into custody in Grant County currently are being sent to Luna County.
