El Paso – The sheriff of El Paso County says allegations that a county commissioner traded votes for favors are unfounded.
Sheriff Richard Wiles today told a news conference that an investigation found no evidence that Commissioner Veronica Escobar did anything wrong.
County Judge Anthony Cobos had accused Escobar of conspiring to trade votes for favors.
Cobos, himself the target of an ongoing federal probe of public corruption, filed a criminal complaint Jan. 27. The complaint alleged deprivation of honest services over a 2007 county commission vote by Escobar.
Escobar has denied wrongdoing and characterized the allegations as politically motivated.
Escobar is running for county judge, the position held by Cobos. He was elected in 2006 and is not seeking another term.
A spokesman for Cobos says the county judge would comment later.
