NM Senate Agrees To Contractor Campaign Disclosure

New Mexico – Government contractors will be required to make online disclosures of their campaign contributions under legislation passed by the Senate.

Supporters say the disclosures could help in uncovering pay-to-play schemes in which a contractor contributes to a public official with influence over the awarding of government business.

The legislation will require companies and individuals trying to get a state or local government contract worth more than $50,000 to disclose campaign contributions they've made to public officials during the previous two years. The contributions will be reported online at a state government Web site.

The bill passed the Senate on a 33-to-8 vote on Monday and goes to the House. The Legislature adjourns on Thursday.
