NM Land Office Signs Agreement With Tribes

KRWG News – ACOMA PUEBLO, N.M. (KRWG) New Mexico Land Commissioner Ray Powell has reached an agreement with four American Indian tribes that opens the lines of communication regarding activities on state trust land.

Powell and leaders from the pueblos of Acoma, Laguna and Zuni and the Hopi tribe signed a memorandum of agreement last week.

The agreement resolves litigation that involved the previous administration at the State Land Office and consultation with the tribes regarding sacred sites on Mount Taylor near Grants.

The agreement clears the way for the Land Office to consult with tribes on proposed activities that are located on trust lands within the boundaries of the area known as the Mount Taylor Traditional Cultural Landscape.
