Committee Shelves Plan To Ban Same Sex Marriage
By KRWG News
New Mexico – A House committee has shelved proposals to stop same-sex marriage in New Mexico.
Three measures were tabled Thursday by the Consumer and Public Affairs Committee on party-line 3-2 votes, with Democrats opposing the proposals. The move likely kills the measures for the session because they're stuck in the committee unless members reconsider and change their votes.
Two of the proposals were constitutional amendments to define marriage as being between a man and woman. Supporters said voters should decide the fate of the proposed constitutional changes. One bill would have prohibited New Mexico from recognizing same-sex marriages from another state.
Attorney General Gary King issued a nonbinding legal opinion last month saying that out-of-state same-sex marriages likely are valid in New Mexico.
