Arrest In Las Cruces Shooting

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – The man responsible for Sunday evening's shooting that sent a 19-year-old to the hospital has been arrested by Las Cruces Police and now faces criminal charges.

Rudy Luevano, 33, is charged with one count each of aggravated battery that may cause death or great bodily harm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Luevano is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $50,000 cash.

The 19-year-old victim of the shooting, the son of Luevano's girlfriend, was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso with a gunshot wound to his forehead. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

At around 7 p.m. Sunday, March 27, Las Cruces Police were called to the 800 block of Mimbres Street where the incident occurred. Detectives learned that an argument about missing jewelry led to a physical confrontation between Luevano and the victim.

At some point during the fight Luevano fired at least one shot from a .22 caliber handgun that struck the young man.

Luevano left the crime scene and was located by police at a home on Missouri Avenue. The victim also left the residence and was located a few blocks away at Young Park.
