Bingaman Bill Aims to Make Financing Available for Innovative Green Technologies

Las Cruces, NM – New Mexico's Senior Senator Jeff Bingaman introduced a bipartisan bill recently, to make financing available to innovative green technologies. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, the bill would create an independent agency within the Department of Energy to provide credit and loans to the private sector in an attempt to bring more green technologies to market.

Victims' Unit Disbanding

Las Cruces – Dona Ana County Sheriff Todd Garrison has announced that his department will phase out its Victims' Assistance Unit by the end of next month.

The three affected employees in the Victims Assistance Unit are being encouraged to apply for other open positions within the department .or elsewhere in Dona Ana County.

Garrison says he believes there are enough non-profit agencies serving the community to warrant the dissolution of the unit.

Las Cruces, NM – New Mexico Department officials are waiting for the results of 24 probable cases of swine influenza from the U-S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The testing process could take several days since the federal agency must analyze samples nationwide; but as KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, the testing could soon be completed at the local level.

NM Schools no Longer required to stay Closed due to Swine Flu

Las Cruces, NM – The number of probable cases of swine influenza in New Mexico jumped from 12 on Monday to 24 today including two in Dona Ana County. Department of Health officials also announced that three cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed in Socorro and Valencia, and as KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, school districts are no longer required to stay closed for health reasons.

Biomedical research grant

Las Cruces – A program based at New Mexico State University has received a major federal grant for biomedical research.

The $17.5 million dollar five-year grant will enable universities throughout New Mexico to continue biomedical research and prepare faculty and students to participate in National Institutes of Health research programs.

Since 2001, NIH money has funded the mentoring and research of 28 young faculty members.

In addition, about 100 college students a year learned about biomedical research.

Governor Bill Richardson Briefs Las Cruces on Swine Flu

Las Cruces, NM – The state of New Mexico ordered the closure of 15 schools Sunday as a precautionary measure to protect against the possible spread of the H1N1 virus, commonly called swine flu. There are currently 3 confirmed cases of swine flu in the state, with 12 more suspected. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, Governor Bill Richardson was in Las Cruces Monday, to brief the public on the states plan to deal with the situation.

More than 3700 Citations Issued During First Month of Las Cruces Photo-Enforcement Cameras

Las Cruces, NM – According to the Las Cruces Police Department more than 3700 citations have been sent out to motorists caught speeding, or running red lights by photo-enforcement cameras during their first month of operation. BREAKING: Several New Mexico Schools Closed due to Swine Flu Concerns

Las Cruces, NM – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control Prevention confirmed the first case of swine influenza in New Mexico over the weekend. State health officials are also waiting for the results of fourteen other probable cases, and as KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, some schools will be closed this week to prevent the virus from spreading.
