City Of Las Cruces Hosting Fall Festival

Las Cruces, NM – The event, in its first year, will feature an appreciation and awards ceremony and Mayor's cookout for Las Cruces first responders including law enforcement and emergency services.

The New Mexico Department of Game and fish will also be on hand to stock Burn Lake and conduct a fishing clinic.

The event will also feature soccer league games and several booths featuring various community services.

NM Health Department Approves 6 Producers

SANTA FE, N.M. – The state Department of Health announced Wednesday it was licensing additional nonprofits for the medical cannabis program.

The department will give patients contact information for the new producers in about eight weeks.

The nonprofits estimate it will be three to six months before medical cannabis is ready for patients.

Producers are allowed to have 95 mature plants and seedlings and an inventory of medical cannabis for patients.

Martinez Threats To Fire Appointees Who Shift Jobs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The head of Martinez's transition team, Heather Wilson, sent a letter Wednesday urging the Richardson administration to suspend any pending job transfers of appointees into so-called classified jobs.

The letter reiterated a request that Wilson said she made shortly after the general election.

NM Budget Deficit At $450M

SANTA FE, N.M. – The worsening budget outlook adds to the problems confronting Republican Gov.-elect Susana Martinez, who takes office in January.

Finance and Administration Secretary Dannette Burch outlined the latest budget shortfall estimate to The Associated Press. The figures include higher Medicaid costs and some growth in spending for agencies for insurance and other expenses next year.

Baby Dies; 17 Year Old Mother Charged With Abuse

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police detectives have learned that 2-month-old Baby Jade died Wednesday afternoon at an El Paso hospital.

Jade passed away at around 4:30 p.m. today after three days on life-support at Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.

Jade's mother, Diana Atima Goenaga, 17, of the 1100 block of Monte Vista Avenue in Las Cruces, was charged on Monday, Nov. 8, with one count of child abuse causing death or great bodily harm. Goenaga was arrested Monday evening and remains at the El Paso County Detention Center.

Las Cruces, NM – The benefit is now in its 17th year and raises funds that benefit Casa de Peregrinos which is an emergency food bank that serves Dona Ana County. La Sociedad para las Artes has raised more than $75,000 for the organization over the years.

NM Panel Approves New Emissions Reporting Rules

SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board voted 5-1 Wednesday to approve the rules, which will apply to some 130 industrial facilities around the state, including power plants, cement plants and refineries.

The rules were proposed by the state Environment Department earlier this year to prepare for participation in a regional cap-and-trade program with other Western states and Canadian provinces.

Department officials say the rules will provide more accurate and consistent data about greenhouse gas emissions.

NM Agriculture Secretary Announces Retirement

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Dr. Miley Gonzalez made the announcement Wednesday.

Gonzalez has overseen the New Mexico Department of Agriculture for almost eight years and has more than four decades of service to the agricultural industry.

Since 1991, Gonzalez has also served in several roles at New Mexico State University, including with the school's agriculture department and extension education programs. He also was an undersecretary administrator at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.

State Police Report Plane Crash Near Anthony

ANTHONY, N.M. – Three people were on board when the plane went down.

According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, emergency crews are trying to extract a woman passenger pinned inside the wreckage.

Two others, a male passenger and the pilot, made it out. State police say the pilot used his cell phone to call for help.

Authorities say the plane crashed about 11 a.m. in a hilly area.

Reward Offered For Stolen Remains

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office reports at least two residential burglaries at apartments over the weekend in an unincorporated area of the county.

The apartments appeared to have been ransacked and numerous items taken including clothes, televisions, surround sound systems, DVD players and more than 50 DVD movies. One of victims also reported the cremated ashes of his sister were taken.

Gov.-Elect Martinez Meets With Gov. Richardson

SANTA FE, N.M. – Martinez visited the Capitol on Tuesday and met privately with Richardson for nearly an hour. The governor told her he was committed to a smooth transition between now and when she takes office on Jan. 1.

Martinez said the governor promised to leave her a note on his last day in office offering some advice on the governorship.

Ex-Senator Heads Gov.-Elect's Inaugural Committee

SANTA FE, N.M. –
Martinez announced Domenici's appointment on Tuesday and said Andrea Goff of Hobbs will be the inaugural committee's executive director.

Goff works as an independent fundraiser.

Martinez said at a news conference that private money will finance her inaugural activities. The Republican takes office on Jan. 1.

New Mexico State University In Las Cruces Part Of $2.4 Million Grant

Las Cruces – A grant from the National Institutes of Health will allow New Mexico State University and the University of Colorado Denver to focus on preparing students in the Southwest and Rocky Mountain region for careers in neuroscience research. The NIH awarded $2.4 million to the two institutions to establish the Building Research Achievement in Neuroscience (BRAiN) program to create the partnership.
