Alamogordo officials have decided not to prohibit drivers from texting or using cell phones while behind the wheel.

According to the Alamogordo Daily News, several commissioners said during Tuesday's meeting that the proposed bans were unenforceable.

Other commissioners have objected to language that exempted law enforcement and criticized wording that said when a person is presumed to have broken the law.

The commission struggled with the proposed ban for months as it added and deleted various provisions.

Federal prosecutors say the last of nine defendants charged in connection with a drug trafficking case in southern New Mexico has been sentenced.

Sandra Portillo on Wednesday was ordered to serve 15 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. She and her husband were accused of using Pettit Farms and Nursery in Anthony, N.M., as a place to store and sell drugs.

Prosecutors say the Portillos and their sons sold drugs to an undercover agent on five separate occasions.

A new audit has found that more than 50 inmates were mistakenly released early from New Mexico prisons largely due to miscalculations.

The New Mexico Corrections Department released Wednesday a review of 6,900 inmate files and identified 51 offenders who were incorrectly released early between September 2010 and September 2012.

Names of those released early were not named since authorities were seeking to bring them back into custody.

Officials say the audit was "phase 1" of three massive reviews of inmate files.
