WNMU Museum Hosts Gala Opening For Art Exhibition

Silver City, NM – The Juried Neo-Mimbreño 2012 Exhibition, held as part of the Silver City Clay Festival, will open August 4 in style during aBlack-on-White Gala Opening Reception at the Western New Mexico University Museum.

Co-curated by artists Diana Ingalls Leyba and Beth Menczer, the exhibition showcases the recent creative efforts of artists throughout the southwest region influenced by the extraordinary painted pottery and culture of the prehistoric Mimbres people.

“When Silver City Clay Festival organizers came to us with the idea to be involved in a celebration of all things clay by hosting a Neo-Mimbreño exhibition, and showcasing our exquisite, significant, and internationally known collections of Mimbres pottery and artifacts, we jumped at the chance to be involved,“ said Dr. Cynthia Ann Bettison, WNMU Museum Director.

Dr. Harry J. Shafer, professor emeritus of anthropology at Texas A&M University, and author of Mimbres Archaeology at the NAN Ranch Ruin is the exhibition juror.

During the exhibition’s opening reception the entire museum will be open to reception guests. In addition to the juried exhibition, several renovated displays on the museum’s main floor will be unveiled. Two of the displays will contain, for the first time, Mimbres pottery and artifacts from WNMU Museum’s newest acquisition, the NAN Ranch Collection.

A fundraiser for the WNMU Museum, the reception begins as 7:00 pm and is $50.00 per person. Gourmet hors d’oeuvres prepared by Sodexo will be served. Six varieties of St. Clair Winery wines will be available for tasting and purchase by the glass. Festive non-alcoholic beverages will be available as well, including WNMU Museum’s signature beverage, Victorian Ginger Punch. After Five/Cocktail Attire, black-on-white dress is requested for this gala reception.

Tickets must be purchased in advance to attend.  Only 300 tickets are available and can be purchased at WNMU Museum, Syzygy Tileworks, Alotta Gelato, Leyba & Ingalls Arts, and Mimbres Region Arts Council. Tickets will not be sold the day of the event.
