New Mexico – The votes are in, and more people favor a pardon for Billy the Kid than oppose the idea.
Gov. Bill Richardson's office has received 809 e-mails and letters weighing in on a pardon for the Kid since setting up a website and e-mail address in mid-December.
Of those, 430 argued for a pardon and 379 opposed it. The survey ended Sunday.
Richardson leaves office Dec. 31, so he has only a few days to decide whether to pardon the Kid in the killing of Lincoln County Sheriff William Brady in 1878.
The website was set up after Albuquerque attorney Randi McGinn petitioned for a pardon, contending Territorial Gov. Lew Wallace promised one in return for the Kid's testimony in a murder case against three men.
