University of New Mexico medical researchers are embarking on a human trial to consider the effectiveness of using cholesterol-lowering medication to treat a genetic disease that afflicts thousands of Hispanics in New Mexico.
However, the Albuquerque Journal reports that the researchers so far are having difficulty finding suitable research subjects. That's because of criteria aimed at not causing harm to subjects.
The research is aimed at exploring treatment for cerebral cavernous malformation, a condition that causes abnormally enlarged blood vessels, leading to epilepsy, disabling headaches, bleeding, permanent brain defects and death.
The researchers are trying to locate possible research subjects who are adults with high cholesterol and cavernous malformations.
