The University of New Mexico's Board of Regents has rejected a proposed tuition increase for students but approved raises of 3 percent for faculty and 2 percent for staff.
The school's administration had proposed a 1.5 percent increase in tuition to help pay for the raises, which will affect some 10,000 faculty and staff members.
Instead, the regents on Friday instructed the administration to look for savings in health benefits and elsewhere to help pay for the raises.
Tuition has risen considerably in recent years at UNM's main campus but still remains among the lowest in the nation.
Last year, faculty and staff received 1 percent raises. That was their first raise in several years, other than a one-time $750 payment in 2012.
