UNM Grants Permit For Protests

By KRWG News

Albuquerque – The University of New Mexico is granting a permit that will allow protesters with Albuquerque's version of the national anti-Wall Street rallies to demonstrate during certain hours through Sunday.

The university announced its decision Monday. It comes after the "(Un)Occupy Albuquerque" protesters were evicted last week from a makeshift campsite at UNM's Yale Park over safety concerns.

One man started a hunger strike and hundreds of others signed an online petition to demand that UNM President David Schmidly meet with protesters.

On Saturday, protesters held a "death march" over First Amendment rights in a rally against the eviction.

The university says the protesters will be allowed to demonstrate at the park between 5 and 10 p.m. until Friday. Permission was also granted for Saturday and Sunday demonstrations between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
