A North Texas man who used a crossbow to shoot an arrow into a stray dog has been sentenced to the maximum two years in state jail.
A judge in Fort Worth on Wednesday sentenced Christopher Swilley. Jurors earlier convicted the 49-year-old Fort Worth man of animal cruelty.
Prosecutors say Swilley fled after shooting the male husky on April 11, 2012, while the animal was in a neighborhood.
Some people who live nearby saw the injured dog reach their yard and called 911. The arrow went in the dog's leg and through his chest.
The dog survived emergency surgery. The animal was adopted two weeks later by a family who named him Dantes.
Prosecutors say the husky still favors one side of his body but otherwise is healthy.
