Texas Probing Failure To Catch Cheating

State auditors will launch an investigation into why the Texas Education Agency failed to catch a broad cheating scam at the largest school district in El Paso.  Auditor John Keel will launch the probe in January. The audit has been requested by Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams.

The school district had apparently pushed out struggling students in an attempt to boost the schools' federal ratings. Former Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia has been sentenced to prison after admitting to devising the scheme.

In 2010, the Texas Education Agency twice cleared the El Paso Independent School District of wrongdoing.

The three-month investigation will end in March. A final report will be released in June.

Keel says the audit is in the planning phase.
