Tech Look Ahead: HP Layoffs, Google Gets Motorola

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

From NPR News, this is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. I'm Audie Cornish. And it's time now for All Tech Considered.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

CORNISH: In this week's Look Ahead, Hewlett-Packard will announce its restructuring plan Wednesday when the company reports its quarterly earnings. NPR's technology correspondent, Steve Henn, says part of that plan could include massive layoffs.

STEVE HENN, BYLINE: You know, Hewlett-Packard, as much as any other company here, helped create Silicon Valley. It made this place what it is today. And folks are expecting that they may well announce that they're laying off 25 to 30,000 people, which will be one of the largest layoffs in this country since the financial crisis.

CORNISH: Also in tech news, remember last year when Google bought Motorola for roughly $12 billion? Well, it's taken a long time for regulators to OK the deal, but the last major holdout, China, has finally approved the purchase.

HENN: And that will open up the door for Google to actually start building stuff. You'll have Google-ola phones, possibly.

CORNISH: We should note that Steve totally made up that word. And finally, after last Friday's glitches with NASDAQ's computer system, the company's CEO issued a statement today blaming problems with Facebook's IPO debut on...

HENN: Bad software. So you have the largest tech IPO in history tripped up by bad software.

CORNISH: Which Facebook probably didn't like. And that's our quick Look Ahead to the week's tech news with NPR's Steve Henn. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
