Teacher Loan Repayment Program Gets Legislative OK

KRWG News – SANTA FE, N.M. (krwg) Legislation is heading to Gov. Susana Martinez that will allow the state to repay federal educational loans of teachers who agree to work in struggling schools in high poverty areas of New Mexico.

The measure won final approval when it unanimously passed the Senate on Wednesday. The House previously approved the bill.

Democratic Rep. Sheryl Williams Stapleton of Albuquerque, who sponsored the measure, said the loan repayment program will help attract teachers to high-risk schools. A teacher must remain at the school for at least two years as a condition of the state's loan repayment.

The legislation creates the program but doesn't allocate money for it.
