Taos Fights Air Force Flyover Plan

By KRWG News

Taos – Taos town councilors have come out against an Air Force plan for low-altitude training flights over northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.

The Town Council, in a special session Monday, approved a resolution opposing the flights from Cannon Air Force Base in eastern New Mexico.

The proposed flights would involve aircraft flying as low as 200 feet above the ground.

The resolution says such flights would pose threats to health, interfere with the peacefulness and beauty residents and visitors enjoy, harm agriculture and wildlife and hurt what it terms the "sacred historic culture and quality of life of the citizens of Taos."

The resolution says low-level flights would bring noise pollution, emissions pollution and vibrations that could harm historic adobe structures, particularly in nearby Taos Pueblo.
