Suspect Arrested in Las Cruces Shooting Death

Las Cruces police have arrested the man suspected in Monday afternoon’s shooting death of 33-year-old Isaiah Lara on south Telshor Boulevard.

Isaac Joe Vargas, 42, of the 900 block of Walker Trail in Dona Ana, N.M., is charged with a first-degree felony count of murder.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of a shooting near an apartment complex at 1414 south Telshor Boulevard. Officers arrived to find 33-year-old Isaiah Lara suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his chest. Lara was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Las Cruces police detectives conduced multiple interviews and identified Vargas as the suspect. A warrant was issued for Vargas’ arrest. He was taken into custody without further incident Tuesday evening.

Vargas was arrested Tuesday evening and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
