State Police Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting That Left Man Dead

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State Police say they're investigating an officer-involved shooting in Clovis that has left one man dead.

They've identified the man as 22-year-old Aaron Joseph Chavez.

The preliminary investigation reveals that around 1 a.m. Monday, a Clovis police officer attempted to stop a stolen vehicle with a man driving.

The driver of the vehicle — later identified as Chavez —fled from the vehicle and a foot pursuit ensued.

During the foot pursuit, the officer opened fire and authorities say Chavez was fatally shot and died from his wounds.

Upon completion of the State Police investigation, the case will be forwarded to an assigned district attorney's office for review.
