Special Mobile Food Distribution Held for Las Cruces Families in Need

Roadrunner Food Bank

On Tuesday, November 20 Roadrunner Food Bank will hold a special holiday mobile food pantry distribution to provide food to low-income families and their children right before Thanksgiving.  Here is a statement from the food bank:

The distribution will take place at Peace Lutheran Church located at 1701 Missouri Ave in Las Cruces starting at 3 pm. Any community member experiencing hunger and struggling to put food on the table is welcome to attend.

It is estimated about 200 families will be provided food to take home.  In addition, other services will be available to attendees of the distribution including: assistance applying for SNAP (food stamp) benefits, SNAP budget-friendly recipes, Medicare and Medicaid information, financial literacy, college assistance information for migrant student and other services assisting low-income and at-risk people in the community.

Mag Strittmatter, president and CEO of Roadrunner Food Bank said, “The people we serve aren’t one dimensional – food insecurity is only one factor.  When we are able to bring additional partners to food distribution sites, low-income families can seek out multiple services all at the same time.  It is amazing to see the number of partnerships that come about when we can all work together. For this special distribution, families in need will have benefitted from seven to eight additional services.”

Both First Light Credit Union and United HealthCare will have employees on-site volunteering to help clients select food items to take home. A part of the food provided is thanks to a food drive held earlier this fall at First Light Credit Union locations.  Over the last six weeks or so, three of their branches collected food from customers to be given out just in time for Thanksgiving.  United Healthcare also sponsored the mobile food pantry distribution in partnership with volunteers of Peace Lutheran Church.
