By KRWG News

Carlsbad, New Mexico – CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRWG) Two fires burning southwest of Carlsbad in the Guadalupe Mountains that have consumed more than 29 square miles of brush and trees are now 50 percent contained.

Fire officials say the Lookout and Acrey fires had burned more than 18,000 acres by Sunday night.

The Lookout Complex fires, as two blazes are known, are burning in steep, rocky and inaccessible terrain on forest land.

The 3,000-acre Lookout fire was burning about seven miles southwest of Queen.

Fire officials say the 15,400-acre Acrey Fire burning 16 miles northwest of Queen has the potential to threaten a natural gas field.

Authorities say two homes and four outbuildings are threatened by the fires.
