Some Texas VA Nurses May Have To Refund Miscalculated Pay Raises

By KRWG News

Texas – An audit confirms more than 900 Veterans Affairs nurses in Texas mistakenly received extra pay and could have to give the money back.

Marie Weldon with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System says administrators will help the 800 registered nurses and 120 licensed vocational nurses seek waivers. But Weldon, in an April 19 letter, says there are no guarantees that the wrongful pay raises will be forgiven.

The San Antonio Express-News reported Wednesday that a records review led to a more comprehensive audit. Most of the mistaken raises, to retain the nurses, date to October 2002.

The system is working with the VA Central Office, the Austin Information Technology Center and the Defense Finance Accounting System to determine the amount of money that might have to be returned.
