Some NM Parks Waive Fees On New Year's Day

New Mexico State Parks will be waiving fees at several parks on New Year's Day and offering guided hikes as part of a national initiative to get people to start 2013 outdoors.  The so-called First Day Hikes will be offered at Bottomless Lakes, Leasburg Dam, City of Rocks and Rockhound parks in southern New Mexico.

Cerrillos Hills State Park near Santa Fe and Sugarite Canyon State Park in northeastern New Mexico will also be waiving fees and offering New Year's Day hikes.

State Parks Director Tommy Mutz says the hikes will be a great way to cure cabin fever and burn extra holiday calories.

The National Association of State Park Directors says more than 14,000 people hiked more than 30,000 miles in state parks across the country as part of the 2012 First Day Hikes event.
