New Mexico – Authorities say residents of about 100 New Mexico homes evacuated since mid-week because of the raging wildfire in eastern Arizona have been allowed to return home.
Catron County, N.M., Undersheriff Ian Fletcher says the evacuation of the Escudilla-Bonita Acres subdivision close to the Arizona border was lifted late Saturday afternoon.
About 10,000 residents of the White Mountain region of Arizona are still out of their homes.
The U.S. Forest Service has been working in New Mexico to burn out fuels and prevent the fire's advance. The 672-square-mile fire that began May 29 jumped the state line on Friday.
Fletcher says there is increasing concern that about 200 residents in the town of Luna may have to evacuate if the fire advances, but fire officials hope that isn't necessary.
