Sign Replacement Project Continues In Otero County

Cloudcroft - The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) began replacing traffic signs on U.S. 82 and N.M. 244 in Otero County last September to ensure safety and make sure the signs met federal standards.  However, due to weather, the project was suspended.

It will resume on Monday, March 31 and is expected to be completed by this summer. Motorists can expect to encounter short lane closures in areas without shoulders, but should see no significant delays.

The signs are located along approximately 45 miles of state highway and will include new retro-reflective materials that make them brighter and more readable at night.  They will also have sign posts designed to break away if struck by a vehicle.

“What looks like a perfectly good sign in the daytime may not reflect properly at night,” said Jerry Hickman, NMDOT Tularosa Project Manager. “It’s important for NMDOT to replace aging and weathered signs with newer, brighter signs for improved visibility and safety.”

Additional work will include striping and improvements to two safety ramps along U.S. 82 between Cloudcroft and Alamogordo.
