Las Cruces police remind residents to use caution when receiving telephone calls from unknown callers.
Police learned that several residents have received suspicious telephone calls from callers who have threatened criminal charges or arrest if they don’t provide personal information or do not return the call.
Some of the calls in question came from a telephone number with a 718 area code. The calls in question are likely a scam, and an attempt to gain personal or financial information.
LCPD reminds residents to refrain from providing personal or financial information to anyone who calls or to anyone they do not know. Residents should simply hang up and are encouraged not to return the call.
Anyone who questions the validity of a call that might be from a legitimate business or financial institution can simply contact the business at a known telephone number – not the phone number provided by the caller but by calling the phone number listed on the back of a bank card or the phone number listed on a monthly bill.
