The event honors a former local basketball star with MS. Here is a letter detailing that part of the story:

Attention: Basketball Coaches of the Las Cruces School System (& friends of Kelsey Crooks),

I would like to inform you about a situation concerning a wonderful person and former NMSU/OHS basketball player, Kelsey Crooks. It is also an opportunity to help raise awareness for a great cause regarding the research of Multiple Sclerosis.*

Unfortunately, Kelsey has recently been diagnosed with MS. Kelsey Crooks played basketball for OHS in 1995 - 1997 and NMSU during the years of 1999 - 2004. Upon graduation from NMSU, Kelsey went to Phoenix, AZ, for a job using his degree in Industrial Engineering.

He recently returned to Las Cruces to pursue a career in teaching and coaching basketball. This is when the MS was diagnosed.
This debilitating disease has severely interfered with Kelsey's physical life, and although he faces many challenges, his attitude is as positive as ever.

In 2006, Kelsey's mom, Zo Anne (counselor, Vista Middle School) died of Leukemia. This might have been a factor in Kelsey's MS diagnoses. (They say trauma can be a factor.) Zo Anne was arguably the biggest OHS/NMSU basketball fan in history! Her strength and zest for life is apparent in Kelsey, he is not one to complain and is extremely motivated to beat his disease. This lofty feat can be possible with support from great people like you and your players.

*This letter is written in the hopes that representatives from your teams will be available to participate in the MS WALK on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Young Park at 9:00 a.m. (Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.) It is our hope that your players and others show up in your TEAM/SCHOOL COLORS to show support for Kelsey. (The rest of us will be in ORANGE!)

ORANGE is the official' MS color.

Coach Henson will be at this walk as well as members from the NMSU basketball team. Come on Saturday to show your support for one of our own, as well as a chance to congratulate the NMSU players! This community gesture will forever live in the heart of Kelsey Crooks.

Thank you,
Katie Baker
