Santa Fe 400th Short On Funding

By KRWG News

Santa Fe – The nonprofit group charged with organizing and promoting Santa Fe's 400th anniversary celebration is laying off its executive director and canceling a public relations and fundraising contract as revenue falls short.

The changes were approved this week by the Santa Fe 400th Anniversary Inc. board. Two full-time staff members were also laid off.

Board president Maurice Bonal says the group couldn't attract the funding for the 2010 commemoration that it needed.

The group has spent most of the $1.1 million in public money it was given last year and this week asked the City Council to allocate another $750,000. It had planned to spend about $11 million on the 16-month anniversary program, later revised that to $7 million and then said it could be done for $3 million.
