Sanctuary Cities Bill Derailed By Senators

By KRWG News

Texas – AUSTIN, Texas (KRWG) An immigration bill that had flared into one of the most divisive issues of the legislative session has been derailed in the Texas Senate.

The original bill would allow local police to question anyone they detain about their citizenship status. It had already passed the House.

A key Senate committee, however, voted Wednesday to eliminate the police enforcement measure that citizens had packed a committee room to testify against.

The so-called "sanctuary cities" bill had been declared an emergency by Gov. Rick Perry and been the center of emotional and racially charged debate.
