Richardson Recognized For Anti-Slaughter Efforts

Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is being recognized for his efforts to block a return to domestic horse slaughter.

The Humane Society of the United States Friday presents its 2013 Humane Horseman of the Year Award to Richardson, who has been working with the group to fight the opening of a horse slaughterhouse in Roswell. The company is one of three that have been licensed to begin slaughtering horses for the first time since 2007. But the companies have been blocked from opening by litigation by the Humane Society and the New Mexico attorney general.

Richardson and actor Robert Redford created the Foundation to Protect New Mexico Wildlife last summer to fight horse slaughter.
