Refund From El Paso Electric

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – El Paso Electric customers in Dona Ana and Otero counties who live outside municipal boundaries could soon see lower electricity bills.

The state Public Regulation Commission has ordered the utility to stop collecting franchise fees from certain customers and to refund some of the money already collected.

PRC commissioner Sandy Jones says decreases on bills will range from $3 to $6 per month.

In Dona Ana County, about 44,000 customers will see a 2 percent franchise fee lifted from their bills. They also will share a $5.3 million refund over three years.

Otero County residents will split about $280,000 in rebates.

El Paso Electric spokeswomen Teresa Souza says the company will appeal the decision to the New Mexico Supreme Court.
