Reducing Hunger in Grant County

By KRWG News

Grant County – A new project aims to reduce hunger in Grant County.

Western New Mexico University students are learning to give back to their communities with service learning.

And a new initiative will go beyond giving back and attempt to solve a growing problem: hunger.

Locally .and nationally ..requests for food assistance have risen during the recession.

The 2009-2010 Focus on Food Security in Grant County is a new initiative by WNMU and The Volunteer Center. Students will volunteer through many projects including collecting and distributing food.

The Volunteer Center has organized Lift Every Voice, a community-organizing project using volunteers to eradicate hunger and poverty.

The two groups will also work on Community Gardening.

There are already seven community gardens in Grant County .and the University plans to create one on campus.
