Las Cruces – The Las Cruces Association of Realtors will donate 24 digital cameras to the City of Las Cruces for use in the City's "Picturing El Paseo" project.
Las Cruces is one of four cities nationwide selected to participate in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2010 Smart Growth Implementation Assistance Program (SGIA).
The SGIA program provides technical support to improve a community's planning processes, and incorporate smart growth techniques into the community's future development. Las Cruces' participation will consist of the re-design of the El Paseo corridor between Main Street and University Avenue, including the El Paseo/Idaho intersection.
Susan Lowell, a planner with the City of Las Cruces community development department, says the digital cameras are the perfect gift for use in the project. "Seniors, students, residents and businesses who wish to use the cameras will record their observations about El Paseo. They'll shoot pictures to document three things about El Paseo; their favorite places, signs, and people; areas or features that need improvement, and features that are unsafe such as poles in the middle of sidewalks, areas where more lighting is needed, etc."
Lowell encourages the public to participate in the planning process to envision the future of El Paseo Road and the area around it. Two hour sessions will be held every Wednesday during the month of September at Munson Senior Center, 975 South Mesquite St., between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants are asked to contribute their stories, photos, drawings and paintings associated with the El Paseo corridor.
