Public Comments Accepted For Project

By KRWG News

Alamogordo – Guadalupe District Ranger Carol Telles has issued a public notice opening the public comment period for the South Guadalupe Restoration Central Priority project. The proposed actions move toward restoring ecological functioning to fire-adapted ecosystems in pi on-juniper woodlands and ponderosa pine forests of the southern half of the Guadalupe Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest. There is a need for improving forest health and decreasing the potential for high-intensity, stand-replacing wildfire in the project area. The proposed actions include mechanical thinning and prescribed burning on approximately 18,230 acres of Forest Service lands within the 20,500 acre project area.

In 2004, U.S. Forest Service Southwestern Region developed a strategy, referred to as "Central Priority," to help restore the ecological functionality of fire to fire-adapted ecosystems. In 2006, the Lincoln National Forest developed a "Strategic Plan" to implement this regional strategy. This project has been identified to focus on ecosystem restoration and fuels reduction.

A public scoping period was initiated in February 2009, to gather input and ideas from the public, other agencies and groups on this project. The results of this scoping effort were used in the preparation of an Environmental Assessment (EA).
The Lincoln National Forest encourages your review of the EA. The opportunity to comment on this proposed action is being published as a Legal Notice in the Carlsbad Current-Argus. The comment period ends 30 days following the date of publication of the legal notice in the Current-Argus newspaper. This publication date is the exclusive means for calculating the time to submit comments on the proposed action. Those wishing to comment on this proposal should not rely upon dates or time frames provided by any other source. Only those who provide comment or otherwise express interest in the proposed action during this comment period will be eligible as appellants.
