Officials: Radiation Threat "Extremely Remote"

By KRWG News

New Mexico – State emergency management officials say the possibility of airborne radiation from Japan causing health problems in New Mexico is extremely remote.

The state's secretary of homeland security and emergency management, Michael Duvall, says federal agencies don't expect to see radiation at harmful levels reaching any part of the United States from Japan.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is using a nationwide system which continuously monitors the nation's air and regularly monitors milk, drinking water and precipitation for environmental radiation.

There have been fears of radiation after some of Japan's nuclear reactors were severely damaged by a powerful earthquake and tsunami.
