NMSU Rodeo Team First In The Region; Now Third Nationally

The New Mexico State University's men rodeo team extended their lead in the region, moving their position in the nation to third place. The men also had several wins in individual categories, including men's team both days after their most recent rodeos in Florence, Ariz.

"With four rodeos left, we need to focus on staying sharp and getting the most student athletes qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo," said Jim Brown, NMSU rodeo coach.

The team ended the weekend with wins in the bareback riding, team roping, tie-down roping, saddlebroncs, steer wrestling and men's all-around.

In bareback riding the men took home the top two spots both days, Tony Buckman took first place and Paden Underwood took second. Cooper Dewitt took first both days in saddlebroncs.

The men also did well in team roping, on the first day Ky Barry and Kurtis Barry both took second place and on the second day Pacen Marez took first place, Cody Mirabal and Reno Eddy took second place.

Ky Barry and Marez took the top spots in tie-down during the first day. Both men also won in men's all around over the weekend.

The women also had wins both days in individual as well as women's team. On the first day, Brandi Pfeifer took third and fourth place in breakaway; Kayla Lewis took fourth in barrels; and Shelby Montano took second in goat tying. The women also placed third in woman's team.

On the second day Nicole Sweazea took third in breakaway, first in goat tying and in women's all around. Other wins include Meghan Johnson, who took fourth in barrels.

The next competition for the NMSU rodeo teams will be on March 23 in Tucson, Ariz.
