NMSU Las Cruces Model U.N. Students Host Sunday Event

The Model United Nations team at New Mexico State University will sponsor its first U.N. Women’s Day Fun Run Sunday, March 16. The race will begin at the corner of Arrowhead Drive and Stewart Street, in the area adjacent to the student tailgating lot on the NMSU campus.

Half of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Frontera Women’s Foundation, an organization established in 2003 that raises money to support the work of non-profit organizations serving low-income women and girls. The foundation works to promote social change and end gender violence with services along the U.S.-Mexico border, from southern New Mexico to Brownsville, Texas.

“International Women's Day, March 8, is what we chose as the theme for this run because it is such a relevant issue, not just in other countries, but in ours as well,” said Julia Downs, fundraising chair and sophomore government major. “We are excited to benefit and continue to support the Frontera Women's Foundation. The 5k/10k is going to be a really fun experience; I am confident that every runner will have a great time.”

Model U.N. students are currently raising money to attend the National Model United Nations conference scheduled April 13-17 in New York City. The student organization is an academic simulation intended to educate students on effective communication and multilateral diplomacy. The program is supported by academic coursework organized by the Department of Government in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Check-in for the U.N. Women’s Day Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. Registration is $30 for the 5k, $35 for the 10k; both events begin at 9 a.m.
