NMSU Las Cruces Continues To Grow

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – New Mexico State University's Las Cruces campus tallied 17,225 students on the university's spring 2011 census day, up 0.3 percent from the same time last year. An increase in out-of-state transfer students is credited with boosting the numbers. Systemwide, a total of 28,759 students were counted across all NMSU campuses, up 1.4 percent from the previous spring semester.

"All in all, our enrollment looks good," said Bernadette Montoya, NMSU's interim vice president for student success. "The increase of out-of-state transfer students coming to NMSU follows a trend we've seen for a while of students from other states taking advantage of some of our quality programs."

Also this spring, NMSU Alamogordo totaled 3,575 students, up 5.3 percent from the same time last year. Dona Ana Community College counted 8,874 students, an increase of 5.3 percent. NMSU Grants had 1,601 students, an increase of 7.4 percent. NMSU Carlsbad had 1,807, a decrease of 9.1 percent from the previous spring.

NMSU Las Cruces will open a number of "mini-semester" courses in March, which give students additional options for taking classes and will also lift the university's total student credit hours.
