NM Police Launch Crackdown On Drunken Driving

By KRWG News

New Mexico – ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRWG) New Mexico police have launched a "superblitz" of check points and patrols to crack down on drunken driving during the winter holiday season.

State officials say the anti-drunken driving campaign will run through Jan. 8 and includes television and radio advertising.

New Mexico Traffic Safety Director Mike Sandoval said Friday that alcohol is often a factor in holiday traffic crashes.

During an enforcement campaign against drunken driving last winter, there were 40 traffic deaths and 15 of those involved people who had been drinking.

According to state records, 272 people have died in traffic accidents in New Mexico from January through October and 26 percent of those deaths involved alcohol.
