NM Legislature Heads Off Emissions Rollbacks

SANTA FE, N.M. – Environmental groups are rejoicing after efforts to roll back New Mexico's greenhouse gas emissions rules failed during the legislative session that wrapped up over the weekend.

But Gov. Susana Martinez has vowed to continue reviewing all state regulations with an eye toward improving the business climate in New Mexico and creating jobs.

Martinez is looking at laws passed by the Legislature as well as rules approved by various state boards, commissions and executive agencies.

She wants to determine if the regulations are strangling the development of jobs in New Mexico and whether they're scientifically based.

Supporters of the rules are hopeful the defeat of the legislative measures marks a turning point in the debate over how to grow the economy and maintain New Mexico's role as an energy producing state.
