NM High School: Ump Pushed English-Only In Game

Baseball coaches from a New Mexico high school plan to file a formal complaint against an umpire who allegedly told a Latino player to stop speaking Spanish during a game.

The Albuquerque Journal report Emmanuel Burciaga (boor-SEE'-AH'-gah), an assistant coach at Gadsden High School, says umpire Corey Jones told his first baseman to stop speaking Spanish or face ejection during a game in Alamogordo on Tuesday.

He says the home plate umpire later intervened and told Jones there was no rule prohibiting players from speaking Spanish.

The school says it plans to file a complaint with the New Mexico Activities Association, the governing body of the state's high school sports.

The Gadsden Independent School District bumps up against the Mexican border and is 97 percent Latino.
