NM Concealed Carry Study

By KRWG News

New Mexico – New Mexico will do an in-depth study of what 18 other states require for someone to get a license to carry a concealed weapon.

Officials want to see if requirements in those states are as strict as New Mexico's.

Last month, New Mexico stopped recognizing Utah's concealed carry licenses because its standards were significantly less than New Mexico's for having a concealed handgun.

The deputy director of the Department of Public Safety's Special Investigations Division, Jim Plagens, then began looking at the other 18 states.

He's studied such things as whether other states do background checks to get a license for a concealed weapon and whether they require students to fire a handgun.

His initial report, submitted last week, prompted the in-depth survey.
