NM Changes Rent Procedure For Parolees

Having enough rent money will no longer be a must for indigent parolees before they are released from prison under a change being made by New Mexico corrections officials.  The director of probation and parole, Jose Cordova, told the Albuquerque Journal about the change after the newspaper inquired about the case of Kyle Burnett.

The Albuquerque man was kept in custody four months after his release date because he didn't have enough money for the first month's rent at a halfway house.

Cordova says indigent parolees won't be required to come up with the money as long as funds are available and there are no other issues that would prevent them from being released into the community.

The Corrections Department has spent more than $28,000 since July to help cover rent costs for about 65 parolees.
