New Mexico House Speaker Talks With White House About Raising Minimum Wage

On Thursday, New Mexico House Speaker W. Ken Martinez joined other legislators from around the country to participate in a conference call with President Barack Obama and Senior White House staff including Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President, David Agnew, Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, and Cecilia Munoz, Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council.

The call occurred two days after the President’s State of the Union Address, which focused on his legislative agenda and called for 2014 to be a "year of action".

On the call, President Obama again outlined his priorities for 2014 and his White House staff took questions.

Speaker Martinez offered up a bushel of green chile from New Mexico to the White House, in which the White House graciously accepted.

The Speaker then highlighted his commitment to increase to the minimum wage during New Mexico's legislative session.

David Agnew and Valerie Jarrett both thanked Speaker Martinez for his leadership on minimum wage in New Mexico and offered their support.
