New Mexico Considers Criminal Justice Reform

A newly formed legislative subcommittee is looking at proposed changes to New Mexico's criminal justice system.

The subcommittee is scheduled to hold its first meeting Tuesday in Santa Fe.

Rep. Antonio "Moe" Maestas is co-chair of the subcommittee. He says lawmakers want to focus on violent offenders and examine ways to make the system less expensive.

The meeting comes as state Correction Secretary Gregg Marcantel has launched a number of reforms, including looking at preventing mistaken early releases.
