New General Counsel For NMSU

Lizbeth Ellis, the interim associate dean for academics at New Mexico State University’s College of Business, has been named as the university’s new general counsel. NMSU President Garrey Carruthers announced the appointment today. Her new position begins July 1.

“Liz Ellis is a knowledgeable and skilled attorney as well as an outstanding Aggie,” Carruthers said. “Her managerial and legal expertise will help in guiding the university in a wide range of legal and policy issues. She also is familiar with NMSU, having spent the past 25 years teaching and mentoring students here. It won’t take any time at all for her to get up to speed as general counsel.”

As general counsel, Ellis will serve as NMSU’s primary attorney, providing legal guidance and services. She has been a professor of business law at NMSU since 1989. In 2004, she became head of the Department of Finance in NMSU’s College of Business. In 2013, she was named the college’s interim associate dean for academics.

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with President Carruthers, the Board of Regents and the NMSU executive team,” Ellis said. “Like President Carruthers, I am an alumnae of NMSU and have a strong commitment to the NMSU mission. During my time in private practice, I was known as a business lawyer who could avoid the adversarial approach to problem solving and negotiate a transaction that served my client’s interests. I will bring that same skill set to the position of general counsel. In this position, my responsibility will be to maintain the appropriate balance between avoidance of legal risk, and creating an environment where the institution can be innovative in achieving its mission.”

Ellis is a member of the New Mexico Bar Association and has been licensed to practice law in New Mexico since 1984. She earned her law degree from Arizona State University, graduating magna cum laude. She also has a bachelor’s in business administration from New Mexico State University.
