Mexican Journalist Asks For Asylum

El Paso – A Mexican journalist who fled to the U.S. with his teenage son after claiming he received death threats for his critical coverage of the Mexican military is asking a federal judge for asylum.

Emilio Gutierrez Soto was expected Friday to plead his asylum case in an El Paso federal courtroom. The newspaperman declared his intent to seek asylum in June 2008 at a New Mexico border crossing, where he arrived with his then-15-year-old son.

The U.S. grants only a fraction of the thousands Mexican asylum requests each year. Another Mexican journalist last year became the first reporter granted asylum since Mexico's bloody drug war erupted and cartels began targeting media.

The judge may not immediately rule on Gutierrez's case.

U.S. immigration officials declined comment.
