New Mexico – Republican Gov. Susana Martinez says she's grateful the New Mexico Legislature approved some of her priorities during the session that ended Saturday.
She says she'll go over the $5.4 billion budget passed by the Legislature line by line and will veto a tax increase aimed at shoring up the state's unemployment compensation program.
And, she's vowing to continue pushing on initiatives that stalled in the final days. Those include ending social promotion in grade schools by passing students who aren't prepared and reversing course on the state's practice of issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. She says that's what a majority of voters are demanding.
Flanked by a group of Santa Fe school children, Martinez summed up her thoughts on her first legislative session during a news conference Saturday afternoon.
